![]() While original Japanese reports said that the 5" shell came from a destroyer, non of Taffy 3's destroyers or destroyer escorts were within range of Choukai or firing at her. While dead in the water, she was subsequently attacked by a dive bomber, setting off further fires that resulted in her going dead in the water. While the shell was too weak to pierce the hull, the explosion detonated her starboard torpedoes, starting off explosions that knocked out both her engines and rudder. While chasing down Taffy 3 at Samar, Choukai suffered a single 5" hit to her starboard side. But, well, there was a pretty big reason why the US navy took torpedo tubes off their heavy cruisers and Choukai (fourth ship of the Takao-class) perfectly demonstrated why. The Takao-class were pretty much one of the finest heavy cruiser designs in the way. Makes killing them in my Sims so much sweet.
